On Instagram, your visuals have less than three seconds to stop a user from scrolling. A great photo isn’t a “nice-to-have”; it’s a requirement.
The good news is you don’t need an expensive camera. The phone in your pocket is more than powerful enough, as long as you understand the principles of what makes a photo compelling. We’ll focus on three: Composition, Lighting, and Cohesion.
Play 1: Master Your Composition
Composition is simply how you arrange the elements in your photo. A well-composed photo feels balanced and guides the viewer’s eye exactly where you want it to go.
Here are two simple rules the pros use:
- The Rule of Thirds: This is the most important rule in all of photography. Imagine your screen has a tic-tac-toe grid on it (you can turn this on in your phone’s camera settings). Instead of placing your subject dead-center, place it along one of the lines or where the lines intersect. This creates a more dynamic and visually interesting image.
- Leading Lines: Use natural lines in your environment—a road, a fence, the edge of a building—to draw the viewer’s eye toward your subject. These lines create a path for the eye to follow, adding depth and focus to your shot.
Play 2: Find the Good Light
Lighting is everything. It sets the mood, creates depth, and can make or break a photo. The best light is almost always natural light.
- Seek the “Golden Hour”: This is the magical hour just after sunrise and just before sunset. The light is soft, warm, and golden, creating beautiful, flattering photos with long, gentle shadows. Avoid shooting in harsh, direct midday sun, which creates ugly, hard shadows.
- Use a Window: If you’re shooting indoors, the best light source is a large window. Position your subject so the window light falls on them from the front or side, not from behind. This creates soft, even lighting that looks professional.
Play 3: Create a Cohesive Feed
Individual photos are important, but your profile grid is where you build a brand. A cohesive feed—one where the photos look like they belong together—is professional and visually appealing.
The easiest way to achieve this is with a consistent color palette.
- Pick 2-3 Core Colors: Look at your brand or style. Are you warm and earthy? Bright and vibrant? Minimalist and neutral? Choose a few dominant colors and try to feature them in most of your photos. For our plant shop example, “The Urban Jungle,” the palette would be deep greens, terracotta, and bright, airy whites.
- Edit Consistently: You don’t need complex software. Find one or two filters within the Instagram app that you like and use them consistently. Adjust the brightness and contrast so your photos have a similar feel. The goal isn’t for every photo to be identical, but for them to feel like they are part of the same visual family.
